Score validity is two years from the test date. Task 1 Independent: 15 sec prep, 45 sec response to a personal-opinion prompt; Task 2 Integrated (Campus): read 75-100 word notice + listen to dialogue + 30 sec prep + 60 sec response; Task 3 Integrated (Academic): read 75-100 word excerpt + listen to lecture + 30 sec prep + 60 sec response; Task 4 Integrated (Lecture-only): listen to lecture + 20 sec prep + 60 sec response. Independent + Integrated Writing
Two tasks, one classic essay, one read-listen-write synthesis, across ~29 minutes after the 2023 format change.
Integrated Writing: read 230-300 word passage (3 min) + listen to ~2 min lecture + write 150-225 word summary (20 min) showing how the lecture contradicts the reading. Writing for an Academic Discussion (replaced Independent Essay in 2023): respond to a professor's question and two student posts in 10 minutes with at least one full paragraph (~100+ words) of original argument. Rubric-driven feedback on thesis clarity, citation of the lecture, lexical range and grammatical accuracy.

TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP are not the same, do not conflate
TOEFL iBT (internet-based, 0-120, 4 sections) is what US universities accept for admission. TOEFL ITP (paper, 310-677, 3 sections, no Speaking) is an institutional placement tool used by MY pre-U programmes at Taylor's, Sunway, INTI, HELP, UCSI and IIUM CFS. ITP cannot be used for direct application to Harvard or UC Berkeley. If your goal is US admission, you need iBT.
Choose TOEFL only if your target list is US-primary
TOEFL is the right pick when your university list is US-only or US-dominant. If you are also applying to UK (UCAS), Australia, or Canadian schools, IELTS Academic is more portable, virtually every UK / AU / Canadian university accepts IELTS, while not all accept TOEFL. Speaking pace beats Speaking content, drill the stopwatch first
MY students with strong conversational English routinely score sub-26 on Speaking because they over-prepare ideas and under-prepare pacing. Independent Task 1 gives 15 seconds prep and 45 seconds response; Integrated tasks give 20-30 seconds prep and 60 seconds response. The fix is templated openers ("In my opinion, [position] because firstly... and secondly...") plus stopwatch drilling until the 45/60-second windows feel natural.

Indicative TOEFL iBT minimums for MY applicants: Harvard 100+, MIT 90+, Yale 100, Princeton 108, Columbia 100, Stanford 100; UC system 80-83; Big Ten state universities 79-90; community college and pathway programmes 60-70. Many universities will waive TOEFL if SPM English 1119 is grade A or above and you completed 3+ years in an English-medium school, check each university's English Proficiency Waiver page.
MY test-centre supply is thin, book 4-6 weeks ahead
ETS Authorised Test Centres in Malaysia cluster in Kuala Lumpur / Petaling Jaya (Sunway, KL Sentral, USJ Subang areas), Penang (George Town, Bayan Lepas) and Johor Bahru (Iskandar Puteri / EduCity). Sabah and Sarawak have very limited in-person supply, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition with OnVUE remote proctoring is usually the realistic path. Slots fill 4-6 weeks ahead, especially Aug-Dec around US Fall application deadlines.
Retake gap is 3 days; score validity is 2 years
ETS dropped the old 12-day retake wait in 2019. You can now retake TOEFL iBT after a 3-day gap. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Score validity is 2 years from the test date, so if you are applying for US Fall intake in year X, the cleanest sitting window is August of year X-1 through March of year X. Sitting too early risks expiry before application close.
