What is Speech & Drama Course?

Speech & Drama Course in Malaysia

A Speech & Drama Course at Edustar Malaysia is structured one-to-one work, with small-group options, that shapes dramatic interpretation across four layers: voice (Cicely Berry RSC framework: breath, resonance, articulation, text-on-the-breath), text (verse, prose, monologue, duologue, scene work), presence (movement, gesture, eye-line, stage geography), and performance (audition technique, exam-day flow, recording for self-review). Graded tracks follow LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Ofqual-regulated) Speech Grade 1-8 with three syllabus suites (Verse & Prose, Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking for Communication), LAMDA Performance Grade 1-8 (Acting, Group Acting, Devising Drama, Musical Theatre, Acting in a Pair, Shakespeare Solo), LAMDA Bronze / Silver / Gold medals, plus Trinity College London Speech and Drama running from Initial to Grade 8 and then the ATCL / LTCL / FTCL Performance Diplomas, both awarding UCAS tariff points from Grade 6 upward (LAMDA Acting Grade 8 Distinction = 30 UCAS points). Malaysia-specific tracks include ASWARA Fakulti Teater Diploma & Bachelor of Theatre Arts audition prep (2 contrasting monologues, improvisation, vocal exercise, movement task, panel interview under MOTAC/KKM), KLPAC + The Actors Studio ASK Academy short courses (Sentul West, Pentas 1 + 2 + Stage 1 venues), SPM Kesusasteraan Bahasa Inggeris 4509 dramatic-text component (Shakespeare set text), SPM Kesusasteraan Melayu Komunikatif 2215 (sajak, cerpen, drama, novel), SPM English 1119 Listening + Speaking PBS / PBD oral, MUET 800/3 Speaking voice projection, and the BM oratorical tradition under DBP, Sayembara Pidato Antarabangsa Bahasa Melayu Piala Perdana Menteri (30th edition 2024 at PWTC / Istana Budaya), Sayembara Pantun Antarabangsa, with reference to the Mak Yong (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2005) and Bangsawan classical lineage and the modern BM/EN dramatic lineage of Tan Sri P. Ramlee, Datuk Faridah Merican and Datuk Seri Erra Fazira.

  • 01LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art): Ofqual-regulated Speech Grade 1-8 (Verse & Prose, Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking for Communication) + Performance Grade 1-8 (Acting, Group Acting, Devising Drama, Musical Theatre, Acting in a Pair, Shakespeare Solo) + Bronze / Silver / Gold medals; UCAS tariff from Grade 6 upward (Acting Grade 8 Distinction = 30 UCAS points)
  • 02Trinity College London Speech and Drama: Initial to Grade 8, then the ATCL / LTCL / FTCL Performance Diploma, Solo Performance Acting, Solo Performance Speech & Drama, Group Performance Communication, Musical Theatre Solo (2023-2025 syllabus)
  • 03Marking spine for both boards: Pass 50, Merit 65, Distinction 80 out of 100 per grade; LAMDA / Trinity active MY centres in Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru
  • 04Cicely Berry RSC voice-production framework: breath (rib + diaphragm), resonance (chest / mask / head), articulation (consonant edge), text-on-the-breath (line-as-thought-unit), 'Voice and the Actor' (1973), 'Text in Action' (2001), used at LAMDA, Trinity, KLPAC and ASWARA-adjacent training
  • 05ASWARA Fakulti Teater (MOTAC/KKM, founded 1994, Jalan Tun Ismail KL): Diploma Teater (3-year) + Sarjana Muda Teater (4-year); audition format = 2 contrasting monologues ≤3 min (one BM, one English) + improvisation + vocal exercise + movement task + panel interview
  • 06KLPAC + The Actors Studio (Sentul West, founded 2005 by Datuk Faridah Merican and Datuk Joe Hasham; venues Pentas 1, Pentas 2, Stage 1): ASK Academy of Performing Arts 6-week to 12-week short courses (Acting Foundations, Voice & Speech, Movement, Devising) plus year-round Five Arts Centre productions

For Whom

Who a Speech & Drama Course in Malaysia is for

Coach and plan get set to the real target: a LAMDA or Trinity Speech grade, a school drama-club lead, a MUET Paper 3 candidate, or a KLPAC or ASWARA aspirant.

LAMDA / Trinity Speech & Drama grade aspirants

Graded-exam track. The student (often Year 3 through Form 5, ages 7-17) is taking LAMDA Speech Grade 1-8 (Verse & Prose, Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking) or LAMDA Performance Grade 1-8 (Acting Solo, Group Acting, Devising, Musical Theatre, Shakespeare Solo) or LAMDA Bronze / Silver / Gold medals, or Trinity College London Speech and Drama Initial-Grade 8 with the ATCL / LTCL / FTCL Diploma. Tutors work the syllabus components against the Pass 50 / Merit 65 / Distinction 80 marking spine. UCAS tariff matters from Grade 6 upward.

  • Strong on memorised piece, weak on sight-read or impromptu component
  • Verse-speaking iambic pentameter unfamiliar, Shakespeare Solo at LAMDA Grade 7-8 stalls
  • Sight-read first-glance pattern not drilled, eye keeps darting back to the page
  • Marking sheet feedback from school speech-drama teacher inconsistent or absent

School drama-club leaders & SPM Kesusasteraan 4509 / 2215 students

School and SPM-exam window. The student is on the Drama Club / Excellence Malay Language Club / Public Speaking Club roster and preparing for inter-school Pidato + Pantomim competitions, SPM English 1119 Listening + Speaking PBS/PBD oral, SPM Kesusasteraan Bahasa Inggeris 4509 dramatic-text analysis (Shakespeare set text component), or SPM Kesusasteraan Melayu Komunikatif 2215 drama component (sajak, cerpen, drama, novel). Coaches calibrate to school co-curricular calendar.

  • Pidato delivery monotone: no pause discipline, no eye-line variation, fillers ("erm", "uhh")
  • Pantomim sketch falls flat: gestures too small, no audience read
  • Shakespeare set text feels alien, language barrier in 4509 dramatic component
  • SPM 2215 drama-text answer reads like a plot summary, not a dramatic-interpretation analysis

MUET 800/3 Speaking candidates needing voice-projection lift

Pre-university window. The student (Form 6, Matrikulasi, Foundation, Pre-U) is sitting MUET (MPM code 800) Paper 3 Speaking, 4 tasks (Task 1A + 1B individual response 2 min each; Task 2A + 2B 4-candidate group interaction) CEFR-graded Band 1-5+. Many aim for Band 4 (CEFR B2) as the gate into medicine, law, dentistry or teaching degrees at UM, UKM, USM, UPM, UTM, UiTM. Speech & Drama coaching transfers directly, voice projection, pause discipline, prosody, eye contact, gesture economy.

  • Voice trails off mid-sentence, examiner asks to repeat
  • Filler words ("basically", "like", "erm") eat into the 2-minute Task 1 clock
  • Eye contact only with the timer, never with the partner candidates in Task 2
  • Body language closed: slumped shoulders, fingers locked, no gesture vocabulary

KLPAC / ASWARA degree & industry aspirants

Career-track window. The student (Form 5 through young-adult, 17-25) is preparing for ASWARA Fakulti Teater Diploma / Bachelor audition (2 contrasting monologues + improv + vocal + movement + interview), KLPAC + The Actors Studio ASK Academy short-course intake, or industry casting calls (TV drama BM, English-track filem, commercial voice-over). UiTM Fakulti Filem, Teater dan Animasi is the parallel public-university route. Adult industry aspirants also fit here.

  • Monologue selection generic, not contrasting enough (both pieces sit in the same emotional gear)
  • Improvisation paralysis: freezes when the prompt is given, can't get past 'status setting'
  • Vocal range narrow, same volume + pitch + tonality across both monologues
  • Interview narrative weak: can't articulate why theatre, training history feels thin, no viewing diary
Curriculum

What speech & drama coaching covers

Three modules across the Malaysian speech-and-drama pipeline, Foundations (voice + diction + presence using Cicely Berry RSC framework), Performance (monologue + duologue + scene + LAMDA / Trinity Grade 1-5), and Advanced (Grade 6-8 + KLPAC / ASWARA audition prep).

Foundations: voice, diction, presence (Cicely Berry RSC framework)

The technical floor most school drama-club practice skips. Coaches drill the Cicely Berry voice spine (breath, resonance, articulation, text-on-the-breath) so the student can project a line in a 200-seat hall without forcing.

Breath drawn low into the ribs and diaphragm (Cicely Berry's 'rib reserve'); an aligned head and neck that lets the voice travel without strain; resonance placement, chest / mask / head; articulation drills (consonant edge, vowel clarity, tongue + jaw release); 'text-on-the-breath' technique, line as one thought-unit on one breath; received pronunciation (RP) vs Malaysian English calibration depending on target audience; Bahasa Melayu klasik intonation for BM track (asli, sebutan baku, suara dalam); eye-line and stage geography (downstage, upstage, the third row); gesture economy and stillness as choice; entrances and exits; basic stage directions (cross, weight shift, freeze); pidato / public-speaking presence transfer (MUET 800/3 Speaking, school Pidato events); pre-performance anxiety reframe and warm-up routine (10-minute lip trills → sirens → articulation drills → vowel scales).

Performance: monologue, duologue, scene, LAMDA / Trinity Grade 1-5

The dramatic-interpretation layer. Coaches drill monologue work, duologue partnering, and scene study against the LAMDA Speech Grade 1-5 + LAMDA Performance Grade 1-5 + Trinity Speech and Drama Initial-Grade 5 syllabus: Verse & Prose, Solo Speaking, Acting Solo, Devising Drama, Reading for Performance.

LAMDA Speech Grade 1-5 syllabus components: Verse & Prose (memorised + sight-read), Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking for Communication (introduce a topic, recite, audience engagement); LAMDA Performance Grade 1-5, Acting Solo (one prepared piece + sight-read), Group Acting, Devising Drama, Musical Theatre Solo, Acting in a Pair, Shakespeare Solo (Grade 4+); Trinity College London Speech and Drama Initial-Grade 5, Solo Performance in Acting, Solo Performance in Speech and Drama, Group Performance in Communication, Musical Theatre Solo; monologue selection strategy (length appropriate to grade, contrasting tone, age-appropriate, audition-bank-ready); duologue partnering and listening (the second actor builds the first); scene study analysis, Stanislavski objective and obstacle, given circumstances, beats; verse-speaking fundamentals (iambic pentameter scansion for Shakespeare, Trinity Grade 4+ and LAMDA Grade 4+); prose interpretation; SPM Kesusasteraan Bahasa Inggeris 4509 dramatic-text analysis (Shakespeare set text component); SPM Kesusasteraan Melayu Komunikatif 2215 drama component; Drama Club / Excellence Malay Language Club Pidato + Pantomim coaching; mock exam runs against grade marking sheet (Pass 50 / Merit 65 / Distinction 80).

Advanced, Grade 6-8 + audition prep + KLPAC / ASWARA

The pre-tertiary and university-track layer. Calibrated to LAMDA / Trinity Grade 6-8 (UCAS-tariff bearing), KLPAC + The Actors Studio ASK Academy short courses, ASWARA Fakulti Teater Diploma / Bachelor audition prep, and entry-level industry casting calls. Cicely Berry text-in-action work for Shakespeare.

LAMDA Speech Grade 6-8 (Verse & Prose advanced repertoire, Reading for Performance critical commentary, Solo Speaking original speech with Q&A); LAMDA Performance Grade 6-8: Acting Solo with viva voce, Group Acting, Devising Drama, Shakespeare Solo (mandatory Shakespeare verse-speaking, Grade 7+ in advanced sonnet/soliloquy); LAMDA Bronze / Silver / Gold medals as alternative to Grade 6-8 (medal stream emphasises performance + discussion); Trinity Speech and Drama Grade 6-8 + ATCL / LTCL / FTCL Performance Diploma (Diploma = pre-tertiary professional level); UCAS tariff calculations (LAMDA Acting Grade 8 Distinction = 30 UCAS points; Grade 7 Distinction = 24 UCAS points); ASWARA Fakulti Teater audition prep, 2 contrasting monologues ≤3 min (one BM and one English), improvisation task drill (status, environment, emotional shift, partner work), vocal exercise (projection + range + tonality), movement task (Laban effort qualities, neutral mask, physical character), panel interview (motivation, training history, viewing diary); KLPAC + The Actors Studio ASK Academy short-course prep (Acting Foundations, Voice & Speech, Movement, Devising, 6-12 week modules at Sentul West Pentas 1 + 2 + Stage 1); Cicely Berry 'Text in Action' (2001) Shakespeare verse work, phrasing, antithesis, caesura, line-endings as breath-points; entry-level industry casting workshops (TV drama BM track, English-track filem, voice-over commercials); audition tape recording (self-tape standard headshot framing, slate, two-take rule).

How It Works

From first call to first speech-and-drama session

How starting a Speech & Drama Course with Edustar works: 12 months per LAMDA / Trinity grade, 6-12 months per ASWARA / KLPAC audition cycle.

  1. 1

    Free needs assessment (Day 0)

Give us the student's age, where they are today (school drama club, a prior LAMDA / Trinity grade, or no training at all), the target (LAMDA / Trinity Speech grade exam, ASWARA / KLPAC audition, SPM 1119 oral, MUET 800/3, Pidato BM, hobby), the language route (English, Bahasa Melayu or bilingual), and a rough timeframe. We stay honest about the real pace: a grade a year is standard, with 6-12 months for ASWARA audition prep.

    ~15 min
  2. 2

Diagnostic, recorded monologue + sight-read + voice sample

Short diagnostic: a 60-90 second monologue or recitation of the student's choice, a sight-read of an unfamiliar text (graded to level), and a voice sample (breath capacity, projection, articulation). Coach reviews for breath support, articulation clarity, eye-line, gesture economy, pace, vocal range, and text understanding. For grade-track candidates: starting grade calibrated against LAMDA / Trinity marking spine.

    Before lesson 1
  3. 3

Coach matching (syllabus + track specialist)

We bring in a coach grounded in the chosen syllabus and target: a LAMDA-accredited coach for the LAMDA grade track, a Trinity-accredited one for Trinity, an ASWARA, UiTM or KLPAC-trained coach for degree and industry audition prep, a MUET-seasoned coach for the 800/3 lift, and a DBP-tradition coach for Sayembara Pidato BM. Bilingual coaches for the SPM Kesusasteraan 4509 and 2215 combo are matched where available.

    1-3 days
  4. 4

First lesson, Cicely Berry voice spine + warm-up routine

Coach anchors to the universal voice-and-text spine: breath (rib expansion + diaphragm release), resonance placement (chest / mask / head), articulation (consonant edge, vowel clarity, tongue + jaw release), text-on-the-breath. A fixed 10-minute warm-up opens every session from lesson 1, working through articulation drills, lip trills, sirens, vowel scales and a resonance ladder. Posture, eye-line and stage geography come in early, alongside the anxiety reframe that treats nerves as excitement.

    Lesson 1
  5. 5

Weekly drilling: text work, repertoire build, recording review

Weekly 45-60 minute sessions on text analysis (objective + obstacle + beats), monologue + duologue build, sight-read first-glance pattern, verse-speaking (iambic pentameter scansion for Shakespeare), articulation drills, eye-line + gesture work. For LAMDA / Trinity grade-track: syllabus components drilled, Verse & Prose, Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking, Acting Solo, Group Acting. For SPM / MUET: oral component prepared against marking criteria. A reference clip goes on record each week and is replayed so the student can watch their own delivery.

Ongoing: about 8-12 weeks per cycle, and a year to a grade
  6. 6

Target-cycle drilling ahead of the exam or audition

In the 6-8 weeks before the target, we run full-length mock sittings under exam timing (the LAMDA flow with its sight-read insert, the Trinity flow with a viva voce drill), a mock ASWARA-format audition covering two contrasting monologues plus improv, vocal, movement and interview, and a full Pidato run-through timed to the DBP rubric. Past papers and past audition footage are pulled apart, and the repertoire is brought up to performance standard. Everything is judged against the board's own scheme: LAMDA and Trinity marking criteria, the ASWARA audition rubric, or the MUET MPM band descriptors.

    Final 6-8 weeks pre-target
  7. 7

    Target day support + post-review

The last 1-2 weeks are dress runs in the real setting, a run-through in the head of the stage entry and exam-room etiquette (slate the name, freeze, hold the eye-line to the back wall rather than the panel), and warm-up timing pinned to the actual call slot. Once the exam is done, we sit with the LAMDA or Trinity marking sheet and pick out the habits that keep shaving off marks. Once an audition is done, we watch back any footage and read what the room responded to. After a Pidato, we hold the BM delivery up against the DBP rubric and prepare the next round. Coaches stay with the student across the long grade-ladder and audition seasons.

    Final 1-2 weeks + post-target review
Good to know

Things parents ask us first

  • LAMDA vs Trinity grade pathway, pick the syllabus before booking the first lesson

Both LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) and Trinity College London (Speech and Drama) are Ofqual-regulated UK graded boards with active MY centres. Both run Initial / Grade 1-8 plus Diploma. Both award UCAS tariff points from Grade 6 upward (LAMDA Acting Grade 8 Distinction = 30 UCAS points; Trinity ATCL = equivalent diploma tier). Pedagogical difference: LAMDA breaks the syllabus into multiple parallel suites, Speech (Verse & Prose, Reading for Performance, Solo Speaking) and Performance (Acting Solo, Group Acting, Devising, Musical Theatre, Shakespeare Solo) plus a separate Bronze / Silver / Gold medal stream emphasising discussion. Trinity merges syllabuses into Solo Performance Acting, Solo Performance Speech & Drama, Group Performance Communication, Musical Theatre Solo. Marking spine identical: Pass 50, Merit 65, Distinction 80 out of 100. Pick by the candidate's strength, LAMDA if the student wants discrete tracks (Speech-only or Acting-only); Trinity if the student wants the merged solo-performer flow. Coaches accredited to one syllabus are not always fluent in the other; we match accordingly.

  • ASWARA Fakulti Teater degree route, audition prep is 6-12 months of structured coaching

ASWARA (Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan) under MOTAC/KKM is the national academy of arts at Jalan Tun Ismail KL, founded 1994. Fakulti Teater offers Diploma Teater (3-year) and Sarjana Muda Teater (4-year). Audition format: 2 contrasting monologues (≤3 min each, one in Bahasa Melayu and one in English) + improvisation task + vocal exercise + movement task + panel interview. Realistic preparation timeline is 6-12 months of structured weekly coaching, covering monologue selection (one BM classical or contemporary, one English contemporary or Shakespeare verse), improvisation reflexes (status work, environment, emotional shift, partner listening), vocal projection (Cicely Berry RSC spine), Laban effort qualities for movement, and the interview narrative (why theatre, training history, viewing diary). UiTM Fakulti Filem, Teater dan Animasi and the Aswara network also offer related pathways. Coaches who have themselves trained at ASWARA / KLPAC / The Actors Studio are matched specifically.

  • KLPAC + The Actors Studio audition prep, ASK Academy short courses (Sentul West)

KLPAC (Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre) at Sentul West was founded in 2005 by Datuk Faridah Merican and Datuk Joe Hasham OAM (The Actors Studio, founded 1989), and operates three venues: Pentas 1, Pentas 2, and Stage 1 (black-box). ASK Academy of Performing Arts runs 6-week to 12-week short courses (Acting Foundations, Voice & Speech, Movement, Devising) plus year-round Five Arts Centre productions and youth theatre workshops. Auditions for KLPAC productions and the ASK Academy intake require a prepared monologue (often contemporary, English or BM) and a short improvisation. Edustar coaches with KLPAC or Actors Studio production experience drill the monologue selection, the cold-read for improv, and the all-important audition-room etiquette (slate name, freeze before starting, eye-line to the wall not the panel). The KLPAC route is the dominant non-degree industry on-ramp in KL.

  • Bahasa vs English drama track: choose before week 1, the conventions diverge sharply

BM dramatic tradition has its own pedagogical spine. Classical roots: Mak Yong (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2005, Kelantan classical dance-drama), Bangsawan (19th-century opera-theatre hybrid), Wayang Kulit. Modern lineage: filem klasik Tan Sri P. Ramlee (Bujang Lapok 1957, Pendekar Bujang Lapok 1959, comedic-dramatic timing benchmark), Datuk Faridah Merican "First Lady of Malaysian Theatre", Datuk Seri Erra Fazira (Sembilu 1994, Layar Lara 1997). Convention: Bahasa Melayu klasik intonation (sebutan baku, suara dalam, prosodi melodi), pantun pembuka, kesimpulan retorik, coached under the DBP (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka) tradition that underlies Sayembara Pidato Antarabangsa Bahasa Melayu Piala Perdana Menteri (30th edition 2024 at PWTC / Istana Budaya). English track follows LAMDA / Trinity received-pronunciation (RP) or Malaysian-English calibration with Cicely Berry RSC pedagogy. A coach strong in one seldom reaches the other in depth, so settle the chosen track at the free consultation, and the match lands right. Bilingual coaches exist (we match those for SPM Kesusasteraan 4509 + 2215 candidates) but are scarcer.

  • Cicely Berry voice production: the spine LAMDA, Trinity and KLPAC all reach for

Cicely Berry was Royal Shakespeare Company voice director from 1969 to 2014. Her two foundational texts, 'Voice and the Actor' (1973) and 'Text in Action' (2001), codify the dominant Anglophone voice-for-acting pedagogy used at LAMDA, Trinity, ASWARA-adjacent training, KLPAC + The Actors Studio voice work, and most serious MY private speech-drama coaches. The spine has four pillars: (1) breath: rib expansion plus diaphragm release, breath as thought-unit not gulp; (2) resonance, chest, mask and head placement awareness so the voice fills a 200-seat hall without strain; (3) articulation, consonant edge and vowel clarity, tongue and jaw release exercises; (4) text-on-the-breath, line as a single thought-unit on a single breath, antithesis and caesura as scaffolding for verse-speaking. The 'rib reserve' drill (in-breath held while speaking) develops sustained-line capacity for Shakespeare verse and long monologue. Coaches drill this from lesson 1 because text choices, gestures, and stage presence all collapse if the breath is wrong.
