The essentials

What is Malay Language Course (general)?

Malay Language Course in Malaysia

Bahasa Melayu is Malaysia's national language under Perkara 152 of the Federal Constitution, codified since 1959 by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, the DBP, through Kamus Dewan and Tatabahasa Dewan Edisi Baharu. Two real-world registers run side by side: Bahasa Melayu Baku (formal/written, used in JPN, JPJ, Imigresen, surat rasmi, university essays) and Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi (conversational, used in pasar, Grab, mamak, office small talk). The course serves general adult learners who need both registers: expats in KL/Penang/Johor Bahru, foreign undergraduates fulfilling MPU3142 Bahasa Kebangsaan A, HR teams running HRD Corp claimable Bahasa-for-workplace training, and partners of Malaysian spouses. It is NOT the academic SPM 1103 track (see academic-malay-language-tuition-malaysia for school-syllabus tuition).

  • 01DBP-standard Bahasa Melayu Baku (Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat, Tatabahasa Dewan)
  • 02Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi for KL / Penang / JB daily life
  • 03MPU3142 Bahasa Kebangsaan A coverage for foreign undergrads
  • 04Survival-phrase pack for new-arrival expats (first 30 days)
  • 05Business / government office register (surat rasmi, salutation)
  • 061-to-1 in-person across Klang Valley, Penang, JB, or online nationwide

Good to know

Things parents ask us first

  • Baku vs Komunikasi. Pick both, not one

Bahasa Melayu Baku (DBP standard, Tatabahasa Dewan codified) is required for any official paperwork: JPN, JPJ, Imigresen, university essays, surat rasmi. Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi is the kolokial register at mamak, pasar, Grab, office small talk. A foreigner who learns only Baku sounds robotic in KL traffic; one who learns only Komunikasi cannot fill out a Form IMM.12. Our default plan teaches both in parallel.

  • Foreign undergraduates: MPU3142 is compulsory

Under MQA's MPU framework, international undergraduates without an SPM Bahasa Melayu credit must complete MPU3142 Bahasa Kebangsaan A (3 credit hours) before degree completion at any MQA-accredited Malaysian university. EMGS confirms this at student-pass stage. Our Module 1 + 2 cover the MPU3142 syllabus directly so the campus elective becomes a refresher, not a hurdle.

  • Expat 3-month survival target

Most expats settling in Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Damansara or George Town aim for survival-level Bahasa Melayu within 3 months. Realistic target: 250 active words, 20 common verb patterns with imbuhan, and confidence at Grab, mamak, Hospital Pantai counter, and the condo guardhouse. A pace of two 90-minute lessons weekly, backed by a daily 15-minute drill, reaches this reliably.

  • DBP is the standard reference

When a tutor disagrees with a textbook, the tie-breaker is DBP's Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat and Tatabahasa Dewan Edisi Baharu. Sebutan baku (standard pronunciation) follows DBP guidelines; regional accents (Kelantan, Kedah, Sabah Malay) are noted as variants but not taught as default.

  • HRD Corp claimable for company teams

Where your employer contributes as a registered HRD Corp member (PSMB-Act-1001 levy), Bahasa Melayu for Workplace Communication counts as claimable training. Our tutors carry HRD-Corp accreditation, and the documentation kit for the levy claim comes with the programme. Common buyer: HR managers running BM upskilling for non-Malay frontline staff.

How It Works

From first call to first lesson

How starting general Malay tuition with Edustar works.

  1. 1

    Free needs assessment

We ask: are you expat, foreign student, business team, or family-route? Which register matters more. Baku (paperwork) or Komunikasi (street)? Target CEFR-style level and timeline.

    ~15 min
  2. 2

Diagnostic call in BM + English

Tutor runs a 20-minute mixed BM-English call to gauge starting point. We DO NOT assume zero. Many expats already have ~50 words from Grab and pasar.

    Before lesson 1
  3. 3

    Tutor matching

We match by track: an MPU3142-experienced tutor for EMGS students, an HRD-Corp-registered trainer for company teams, and a family-route tutor for spouses. Every tutor teaches DBP-standard Baku as the spine.

    1-3 days
